Mini Poodle Features
Size and Temperament
Poodles range in size from Toy, to Miniature, to Standard. Many people want to know what the full grown weight measures are for those sizes. But poodle sizes are actually calculated by height rather than weight:
- Toys are 10 inches and under.
- Miniatures are 11 to 15 inches.
- Standards are over 15 inches, while many are as high as 30 inches or more.
As you can see, there is a large difference in size between a Miniature poodle and a Standard one. Bee Haven poodles are Miniatures—and small Miniatures at that. Our Sire, Beau, stands at 13 inches; and Zara at just 11 inches.
Poodles are often stereotyped as “high strung,” especially smaller poodles. While they are moderately high-energy, deeming every poodle as high strung is a disservice to the breed. Poodles are very intelligent, trainable, and loyal, making them great family dogs.
Coat and Hypoallergenics
Some people ask if poodles are hypoallergenic, or non-shedding. The answer is a bit surprising. The growth cycle of poodles’ fur runs differently than in some other dogs, and that difference affects how poodles shed.
Ever notice how some dogs keep the same length coat and rarely, if ever, need grooming? The reason is because their fur has a short growth cycle. When it reaches a certain length, the hair falls out and is replaced by new strands of fur—thus the continual shedding that adorns furniture and clothing.
Poodles, on the other hand, have a longer hair growth cycle than those other dogs, which is why they need periodic grooming to keep their fur clipped short. Their long growth cycle means less hair is lost around the house. It is also why poodles are considered one of the most hypoallergenic dogs.
Everyone is affected differently by a dog’s skin, hair, and saliva. Some people are simply not able to be near a dog because of allergies. But poodles are one of the breeds that most dog allergy sufferers can own. That’s why poodles are bred with other breeds of dog. It’s an attempt to reduce allergies associated with a particular breed.
